I recently had an excuse to call EL AL and ask a sales representative if fees for flight changes could be waived when the change is due to medical circumstances. He responded that the fees would still apply as the airline expects the customer to attempt to receive compensation from their insurer instead (try to appeal to your travel or health insurance).
The airline does understand that there are situations where customers need to change their ticket and are not able to schedule the new date because of the uncertainty of their circumstances. In these cases the airline is able to freeze the ticket until the new date can be scheduled. They will still be charged a fee for changing, but this might avoid being charged multiple times.
Here is the process:
- Call EL AL and choose the option to speak to a sales representative
- Provide the ticket information and an explanation of the medical circumstances
- The case will be referred to a supervisor who may need you to provide medical documentation
- They will get back to you…
Have you ever had to make a flight change for medical reasons, or do you just know a clever way to get fees waived by the airline?. Please share your tips in the comments!
